A three-year-old boy was shot dead and his pregnant mother injured after her boyfriend broke into the Texas home they had fled to with 'an assault style rifle'.

Little Elijah Valencia-Garcia was killed in Houston last Friday at around 7pm after Ariel Lujan, 29, opened fire. Lujan was then killed by police after they say he pointed his gun at officers.

The boy's pregnant mom, Veronica Valencia, was also hit in her leg and hand but is expected to survive. Her baby's condition is unknown.

She is said to have fled to her ex and Elijah's father's home where she thought she would be safe from Lujan after the two argued.

But he is said to have followed the mother and son armed with an assault-type rifle and multiple magazines.

The boy's father, Richard Garcia, told Click2Houston: 'He was a really happy kid, for sure he made everybody that got to meet him .

'He would always put a smile on people’s faces and he liked to greet people. He met strangers he would just say ‘Hi’ to everybody.'

He added: 'He really didn’t deserve what happened to him. I got to have him for three years, that was a blessing. The best three years of my life.'

Police said Lujan pointed his rifle at them after holding Garcia at gunpoint. They then opened fire, killing Lujan.

Houston police chief Art Acevedo said footage from the shooting will be released after the investigation is complete.

Acevedo called the shooting a 'senseless act', adding: 'What we found here was a female victim who had been shot by a suspect believed to be her current boyfriend.

'They had been involved in some kind of verbal altercation that’s still under investigation. As a father, I think all of us here have children and young people we love, it’s heart-wrenching when you think about a little child’s life has ended here.'

He added: 'This city, like a lot of other cities, is seeing a tremendous uptick in gun violence… and a big part of it is Covid-19. Another part of it is we're just not holding people accountable.'

Paying tribute Elijah's uncle Edwin Garcia told KHOU: 'He was always smiling; he was always happy. He was very energetic; he was always doing something.'

A GoFundMe has been set up by loved ones to raise money for Elijah's funeral.

The HS2 money pit: Ministers are told first stage of high-speed rail line may cost another £800m... six months after a budget increase saw total costs soar by £20.6bn to £43billion

Ministers have been told that Phase One of controversial rail line HS2 could cost £800million more than planned. It comes just six months after a budget increase saw total predicted costs for the first stage of the high-speed line soar by £20.6billion to £43billion. In a written statement to Parliament, HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson said half of this figure is due to preparation of the route for construction involving 'more significant challenges than anticipated'. This includes the need to remove more asbestos than expected. Another 'significant cost pressure' worth £400 million has also been identified during the development of designs for Euston station. EXCLUSIVE: Disgraced ex-congresswoman Katie Hill quietly settles divorce from 'abusive' husband after blaming him for exposing their 'throuple' sexual relationship with a young female campaign staffer

Disgraced Democratic Congresswoman Katie Hill has quietly settled her divorce from husband Kenny Heslep after blaming him for exposing a ‘throuple’ sexual relationship they were having with a young female campaign staffer, DailyMail.com can reveal. Hill, 33, resigned from Congress last year after the publication of shocking nude photos of the politician cavorting with junior staffer Morgan Desjardins, who was 22 at the time, and an ethics probe was launched into her alleged affair with another aide. The freshman Democrat from California immediately accused her 'abusive' husband Heslep, 36, of trying to humiliate her and leaking the snaps to ruin her political career. But speaking to DailyMail.com about the divorce settlement, Heslep's lawyer said the former congresswoman's claims were 'all smoke and mirrors.'
