New York AG opens investigation into the NYPD after 20-year-old Guatemalan woman was hit and killed by a police cruiser in The Bronx

The New York Attorney General is investigating the death of a Guatemalan immigrant who died when she was hit by a New York Police Department cruiser two months after emigrating to the United States.

Video of the tragic incident that took place October 5 in The Bronx shows the moment Sofía Gómez, 20, ran across the crosswalk of Pelham Parkway and Wallace Avenue and the NYPD car mowed her down.

Police officers, who were responding to a cop's call for backup at a traffic stop on the Throgs Neck Bridge, administered CPR.

Gómez was transported to Jacobi Hospital where she died October 8.

'Executive Order No. 147 confers upon the Attorney General exclusive authority to investigate,' New York Attorney General's Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit said in a statement Sunday.

'And if warranted, prosecute cases in which a law enforcement officer causes the death of an unarmed civilian, as well as cases in which the Attorney General has determined that there is a significant question as to whether the civilian was armed and dangerous at the time his or her death was caused.'

NYPD said the cruiser's sirens and lights were on when the vehicle struck the woman, who was born in the western Guatemalan town of San Marco, WNBC-TVreported.

According to the Daily News, Gómez was on her way home after completing her work shift at a White Plains bakery when she was hit the police cruiser.

María Gómez said her sister shared an apartment with her and sent money to her parents back home.

'She was a quiet, hardworking girl,' she said. 'This loss is very difficult for our family. We are destroyed.'

Roberto Pérez told NY1Noticias that the family is looking into repatriating his cousin's remains to their native country, but that efforts to do have been impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

'Sofia was an innocent girl, full of dreams,' Pérez said. 'They killed her dreams in such a cruel way.'
