Oklahoma cheerleader, 15, is rushed to ICU after football goalpost falls on her head during team photo

An Oklahoma cheerleader has been seriously injured after a football goalpost fell on her head in a freak accident while she was posing for photos with her cheer squad.

Jenessa Thompson, 15, is currently in the intensive care unit after being airlifted to the hospital from Cyril High School on Monday.

The teenager was taking pictures on the school's football field when the goal post toppled over and struck her in the face, knocking her unconscious, ABC 4 reported.

Thompson, a sophomore in high school, had been practicing with the squad when they decided to pose for pictures on the crossbar.

She had been on the ground next to her coach when the structure came down.

'The goalpost hit her solid here right side of her and she was pinned to the ground,' the girl's grandmother, Debbie Thompson said.

'There a lot of blood, the ambulance came, and they said they needed to call the chopper,' she told the news station.

Debbie, who lives near the school grounds, was among the first to arrive at the scene after she was told there was an accident on the field.

She said she arrived to find her granddaughter 'limp' and unresponsive in her coach's arms, 'moaning but pretty much unconscious.'

Thompson was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where doctors fortunately, did not find any brain bleeds or life-threatening damage.

The teen sustained a broken or dislocated jaw from the blow to the head and is being examined for further injuries.

As of Monday night, she is awake and speaking and gave a thumbs up, her family said.

Thompson will spend another couple days in the ICU where she will be monitored very closely.

Debbie, along with other members of Jenessa's family, have taken to Facebook to share updates on her condition while thanking the community for their support.

'She shouldn't have survived that severe a blow to the head but she made it. There were so many people that rushed to the football field and everyone of them was praying hard. The cheerleaders didn't fall apart when it happened, they jumped into action and lifted that massive goal post off of Jenessa's head,' Debbie wrote.

'We even did a "thank you God chant" from all those on the sidewalk outside the hospital when we heard that Jenessa was awake & talking. Thank you everyone. But most of all, Thank you God!'
