Waitress is left stunned after restaurant patron refuses to wear a face covering and writes 'MASK' on check instead of leaving a tip

A Pennsylvania waitress has been left stunned after a customer refused to wear a face covering inside her restaurant and wrote the word 'mask' in the tip section of his bill.

The incident occurred at John Henry's Pub in Ardmore on Sunday evening, with server Jamie Ledwith snapping a photo of the receipt. Her boss, Kathy Kearney, shared the image on social media, where it quickly went viral.

Pennsylvania restaurants can currently operate at a 50 percent capacity, with Governor Tom Wolf mandating that customers must wear face coverings while not seated at their tables. Experts say the masks can greatly reduced the spread of COVID-19.

Lediwth said she was simply following the Governor's mandate when she asked the male patron to cover his nose and mouth while not seated at his table

Lediwth says she politely reminded the male patron of those rules when she spotted him moving around her establishment with his nose and mouth exposed.

'He kind of brushed it off. He said it wasn't a big deal that he didn't have a mask on. And I told him that it wasn't my rule, it was just the rule,' Ledwith told Pennsylvania magazine.

A short time later, the maskless patron requested the bill for his meal, which came to $23.50.

Ledwith processed the transaction before handing the man a merchant receipt, which he was required to sign.

The receipt featured a space for the patron to leave a tip - with Ledwith hopeful she would secure a 20 percent gratuity for her service.

However, she was left shocked when she returned to the man's empty table to find the bill with he word 'mask' written in the space where the tip amount was supposed to go.

'I couldn't even tell you how much I don't care about the money,' Ledwith told NBC 10 on Thursday

'Right now, it's hard for us. I don't want to tell you what to do. I really don't want to tell any other adult what to do. But you know, I do have to abide by the rules.'

Lediwth - who is a single mom - had been out of work for more than six months before returning to work.

After the photo of the bill was shared on Facebook, Ledwith was inundated with messages of support.

Regular patrons have visited the restaurant leaving cards with cash in them, while others have pledged to tip money via Venmo.

'It's been overwhelming,' the server told Philadelphia magazine.

'You try to be nice, but sometimes people are rude and disrespectful anyway. I'm just glad that 99 percent of them are awesome.'

Meanwhile, owner Kathy Kearney say she has also been heartened by the response.

She told DailyMail.com that John Henry's Pub has been inundated with phone calls coming from supporters across the country.

'We've had calls from California, Oregon, Colorado, Florida, all across New York - everywhere,' Kearney stated.

She added that a man cycling past the restaurant on Thursday stopped out front to hand money to another server.

'He just simply wanted to 'pay it forward'. I'm blown away by how many nice people there are, and how kind people can be,' Kearney stated.

The HS2 money pit: Ministers are told first stage of high-speed rail line may cost another £800m... six months after a budget increase saw total costs soar by £20.6bn to £43billion

Ministers have been told that Phase One of controversial rail line HS2 could cost £800million more than planned. It comes just six months after a budget increase saw total predicted costs for the first stage of the high-speed line soar by £20.6billion to £43billion. In a written statement to Parliament, HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson said half of this figure is due to preparation of the route for construction involving 'more significant challenges than anticipated'. This includes the need to remove more asbestos than expected. Another 'significant cost pressure' worth £400 million has also been identified during the development of designs for Euston station. Mr Stephenson warned that further investigation is being carried out which 'could identify further pressure'. Tests may spare school bubbles from isolating: Children could avoid disruption to lessons by being screened for Covid more often under new proposal

Ministers will explore whether children could take more Covid tests instead of self-isolating to minimise disruption to their schooling. Sajid Javid said he was seeking ‘fresh advice’ on the current policy, which sees up to 250,000 pupils miss school every day. He revealed he would discuss the subject with Education Secretary Gavin Williamson after MPs expressed concerns about children being kept at home for ten days – even after a negative PCR test – because a member of their classroom bubble has been infected. It came as the Children’s Commissioner told how pupils had experienced ‘real trauma’ during successive lockdowns. Sajid Javid said he was seeking ‘fresh advice’ on the current policy where children self-isolate, which sees up to 250,000 pupils miss school every day Dame Rachel de Souza described the class bubble system as ‘very very restrictive’, adding: ‘I think everybody would like it if we could get back to normal, as soon as possible.’ Former health minister Steve Brine tol...
