Pilot dies as his light aircraft crashes in Lake District hills

A pilot has died after his light aircraft crashed in the Lake District hills on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the scene at around 2.50pm after the aircraft crashed north of Troutbeck, between Keswick and Penrith, in Cumbria.

The man who was piloting the aircraft was pronounced as dead at the scene, police have confirmed.

The pilot was the sole person onboard the aircraft and there were no other casualties involved in the crash.

Troutbeck is a village in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria and is located three miles north of Windermere town.

Cumbria Police said in a statement on Sunday evening that a cordon has been put in place around the site.

The statement read: 'Emergency services including police responded following a report at about 2.50pm today (October 11) that a light aircraft had crashed north of Troutbeck, between Keswick and Penrith.

'The single occupant of the aircraft, a man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The man who was piloting the aircraft was the only person onboard the plane and there were no other casualties, Cumbria Police said in a statement

'There were no other casualties.

'The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been contacted and a cordon put in place around the site.'

No further details about the victim or the incident have been confirmed at this stage.
