Australian motorists will soon have access to apps which will allow them to search for the cheapest petrol stations in real time.

South Australians and Tasmanians will now reap the benefits of new legislation which requires petrol stations to report fuel prices to customers online.

Consumers will be able to log into the app and check fuel prices in their local area, which could potentially save hundreds of dollars a year.

Drivers will be able to check the map before filling up, and will be able to drive to the cheapest petrol station rather than the closest.

Motorists in New South Wales, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland have already had access to the state-based apps, but Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory are yet to agree to the service.

In Sydney, a motorist could expect to save at least $343 per year, while the figure for Melburnians could be closer to $148.
